A recommendation.
About 6 months ago I made my own electric guitar. My buddy Smart Steve found a fully equipped woodworking shop that offered a 3 month class and I am hooked.
So back to the magazine. The courage to publish a magazine these days is laudable by itself. But Mortise & Tenon is full of well written stories about the slow, satisfying craft of woodworking.
If you support the idea of self reliance and small business owners and craftsmen, this is the magazine for you. It’s printed on heavy stock and is so well written you don’t need to be a woodworker to enjoy it.
As a bonus, it’s printed in the States.

𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐞: This is a hole or slot cut into one log.
𝐓𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐧: This is a tongue or projection at the end of another log that fits precisely into the mortise.
When constructing a log home, the tenon is cut down from the end of one log and fits into the mortise of another log. This creates a tight, secure fit that is both strong and aesthetically pleasing.

1. Strength and Stability: These joints provide a very strong connection, which is crucial for the structural integrity of a log home.
2. Traditional Aesthetic: They offer a classic, handcrafted look that is often desired in log home designs.
3. Durability: Properly constructed mortise and tenon joints can last for many years, making them a durable choice for log homes.

Wood: shave and fit tenon
Trimming a tenon Once the tenon is in the right rough shape, it’s time to start trimming. A chisel can be used to shave the cheeks of the tenon, both smooth and square. this usually results in lots of thin shavings of wood that curl in on themselves — elegant little spirals of pine or oak or ash. The goal is to creep up on a tight fit, paring away material like a razor removes stubble or a…

Issue 17 is here.
Why does a guy who lives in a condo subscribe to a woodworking magazine?
Because if you believe in craftsmanship and small business, now is the time to support your beliefs. This quarterly is written, photographed, and printed with care in the USA. The articles are always much more than a simple how-to; they’re about our lives.
